Kits & Patterns

These patterns & kits are my original rug hooking designs. I like to give you lots of options when choosing a pattern. I take great care to ensure my hand-drawn patterns are straight on grain and edges are sealed to prevent fraying while hooking. Patterns come with ample space around pattern for ease in hooking and attaching to your frame. Kits contain medium weight wool, prepared for rug hooking. If you order a kit with wool, the wools may vary somewhat from the photos shown here, depending upon availability of the wool. Kits with wool are non-returnable. Examples shown here are of some of the patterns as I have hooked them -- but please, use your favorite colors and have fun with them - you'll be amazed at how different they can look in other color schemes.

Each pattern is available, hand-drawn on:

bullet

Primitive Linen (100% linen)

bullet

Paper pattern or pattern on Red Dot Tracer fabric for you to transfer to your own backing (some larger patterns not available on paper)

Some kits are available with your choice of:

bullet

Wool Packs: wool pieces for you to cut yourself into your favorite strip width.

bullet

Cut Strips: cut into strip widths #8 or #9, depending on the design. To order cut wool strips for any pattern with a wool pack,

add this wool cutting charge $35.00 for each kit. After you place the kit with wool pack in your cart, come back here and add the

cutting charge by clicking here:   Cutting charge is per kit.

HOOK-A-MONTH PATTERNS

Deer & Urn

Hearts and Diamonds

Polly's Hearts

I found two old rugs that I loved and wanted to use for the Hook-a-Month project in the Fall of 2009, so I combined their elements into one new-old design. The border is from one rug and the central design of the deer and urn are from the other. The antique rugs were from the early 1900s. This pattern measures 20 x 29 inches. No kits - pattern only available.

This one was offered as my Spring Hook-a-Month project in 2009. The photo shows the circa 1875 antique rug that sold at auction. I believe it is a one-of-a-kind, as it does not appear to me like a commercial pattern. I hope you love it as much as I do!  Measures 30 x 22. No kits - pattern only available.

This one was offered as my Spring Hook-a-Month project in 2010. My friend and sister hooker, Polly Minick, had a friend who owned the antique rug at one time. Polly gave her permission for me to offer it to you. I made some slight tweaks in the design, at Polly’s request to honor her friend who has passed away. Measures 25 x 25 inches. Pattern only available.

Antique Stars

Midnight Floral

Spotted Dog

This antique rug was featured as a past Hook-a-Month rug. This is a wonderful rug to use wools that have been married together - several reds, several blacks and browns, and several tans (lights and darks) will get you this great aged look. Measures 25 x 25 inches - no kits; pattern on linen only.

The antique rug on which this Fall 2010 Hook-a-Month design was based, is an antique shirred rug. Shirred rugs were made from woolen strips that were drawn up and sewn onto a linen foundation. The design is naïve and most probably was executed with old clothing. The antique rug was probably from New England, circa 1830-1840. Pattern measures 25 x 34 - no kits; pattern on linen only.

The antique rug on which the Summer 2010 Hook-a-Month design was based, is an antique rug circa The antique rug was probably from New England, circa early 1900s. I made some changes to the dog and blocked out the background a bit more. Pattern measures 24 x 14 - no kits; pattern on linen only.

Scrap Hit n Miss

Old Hearts & Penny

Scrappy Table Mat

Create and Decorate magazine project; Oct 2006, Sean O'Brien Photography.

This design helps use up all those left over strips in your worm basket! Use your own color scheme, depending on the colors you have saved up. It's based on an antique quilt pattern and uses a hit and miss style color placement in each 5-inch block.

Measures 15 x 20 inches. Available as pattern only - no kits.

This was previously offered as a beginner's hooking kit, which I've replaced with a new design. This design makes a beautiful table mat in soft, country colors for rug hookers of any skill level. The simplicity of the design is still a great option for beginners, too.

Measures 16 x 12

What do you do with all those left-over strips at the end of a project? If you are looking for a great pattern that will help you use up left-over wool strips -- here it is! Or, if you want to color plan and use your favorite combination of country colors, this will work for that, too.

Measures 12 x 22 inches

Mug Mats

Round Barn Star or Primitive Star ~~~~ Wool colors can vary slightly

Mug mats or hot pads can protect your furniture from hot cups and dishes. Hooked mats can add wonderful country style while doing just that! You can also use them as decorative accents in baskets and bowls. Kit includes cut wool strips and pattern on primitive linen for a PAIR of mats (2 mats of same design.) Each measure 7-8 inches

Log Cabin Adaptation

Create and Decorate magazine project; 2009, Sean O'Brien Photography.

Clamshells - that's what the semi-circular shapes resemble. It was one of the popular geometric patterns for rug hooking in the 1800s. The spaces between the shells, hooked in a brown herringbone wool, make the shells appear to step down into the rug.

This rug would also be beautiful hooked in pastels or jewel tones. I hooked it in black, red, green and mustard. Measures 28 x 20 inches.

A popular quilt pattern of the 1800s, Log Cabin, was the inspiration for this rug. I added my own twist to the design with a meandering border interspersed with dots.

This is a great design to use up all those leftover strips - sorted into darks and lights for opposing sides of the blocks.

Measures 27 x 18 inches. Kit with wool not available.

Bird 'n' Clover

Antique Hearts

1897 Sheep

This is such a simple old rug pattern, but it is one of my favorites! Heart in each corner, simple penny flowers, and a blue bird flying above it all (I omitted the bird, but he will be on your pattern to hook or not.) Hooks up fast and really adds instant age to any room! Also see the companion punch needle pattern. Measures 24 x 18 inches

This adaptation was based on the antique hearts rug that I have used as my business logo for many years now (even before I started hooking.) Barbara Carroll asked to develop a pattern from this rug as well, and she offers a slightly different version of it. We both love it -- it really doesn't get much more primitive than this one! Also see the companion punch needle pattern. Measures 18 x 24 inches.

This is a pattern that I  adapted from a larger antique rug original to Pa. circa 1897, according to the date hooked into it. The sheep and other design elements, as well as using soft old-colors in the wools, makes this a primitive favorite.  This pattern is one of the first known to include a date hooked into the rug. It has a great folky border and the little blue bird in the corner. Great to mix in with old rugs and with country furnishings!

1898 Geometric Primitive

My adaptation of an antique flag rug, as seen in Create & Decorate Aug 2009 issue. Available as a pattern on linen only (no kits.) Adapted from an antique hooked rug that was hooked from strips of old flags. Also see the companion punch needle pattern. Measures 22 x 22 inches.

This pattern is very adaptable to your own color choices, since it is not subject-dependent on certain colors. The design was adapted from an antique rug that I love! So primitive! Also see the companion punch needle pattern. Measures 13 x 17 inches.

I love the simplicity of this rug! It hooks up quickly and would lend itself to many color combinations very well. Great beginner's rug, too. Also see the companion punch needle pattern. Measures 18 x 24

Primitive Penny Runner

Create and Decorate magazine project; Aug 2006, Sean O'Brien Photography

Summer brings out the fun in me, I think. I love summertime and going to the beach. I envision this rug on the porch of a welcoming old cottage on the beach. Or at your house or mine - anywhere!

Pattern size is 28x23 inches.

This is a pattern that I designed - it is pretty way to welcome guests to your home -- place it on a table or hang in an entry way. Hook it in colors to coordinate with your home -- or hook one for a friend; hooks up very quickly! The bottom photo is the same pattern hooked in deeper fall colors and made into a pillow (click it to see a larger photo).

Please type into the Comments box on your order screen - 'light' or 'dark' colors, if you are ordering a kit with wool.

Measures 13 x 13 inches

This long and narrow runner is the perfect primitive accent for floor, table, bench or wherever! I hooked it in primitive muted wools.

Measures 55 x 12 inches.

Paper pattern is half length and must be flipped to complete design.

Patriot's Pineapple

Antique Pottery

Original design for antique pottery lovers - redware, yellowware & stoneware. 14 x 14 inches.

Another small, quick project that would be perfect for a beginner, but just as much fun for an experienced rug hooker.

Measures 15 x 15 inches - a nice size for a table mat or to hang on a cupboard.

I designed this pattern for Create & Decorate magazine & it was featured on the cover -June 2004! The pineapple has long been the Colonial American symbol of hospitality, and I thought it would be appropriate to design this one surrounded with elements of the flag as its border.

Measures 14 x 20

I love old pottery and stoneware, and collect it whenever I can. So it seemed very natural for me to want to put it into a rug! I used soft old-colors in my over-dyed wools to help give this rug an aged and well-loved appearance. Looks great hanging over a grouping of the real thing - redware, stoneware, & mixing bowls.

Measures 16 x 14 inches

Old Black Cat Chair Pad or Table Mat

Fat Jack Chair Pad or Table Mat

Dimensional Sunflowers

My favorite time of the year -- Fall (and Halloween, of course.)  This one was my adaptation of the old black cat post card. Love his bow tie with the polka dots. I hooked the background in several green and gold wools for that wormy look.

This piece is sized perfectly for a chair pad, but it would also be perfect on a table or even hung on your door for the season!

Measures 15 inches

Here's another fun mat for Halloween. Hooks up really fast and only needs three or four wools to look great! I used an orange plaid, gold check, and a cool stripe with fall colors, and just a tad of black inside the mouth and around the eyes.

This piece is also sized perfectly for a chair pad, but use it on a table or hung on your door for the season!

Measures 15 inches

This mat was so much fun to design and hook. Sunflowers are one of my favorites -- so big, so colorful--and they feed our eyes, then they feed the birds. God is the greatest designer of all!

I hooked the petals of the sunflowers with very long loops, and then when they were done, I clipped the loops unevenly to make the fringy petals. When I hooked the centers, I hooked the outer rows closer and the inner rows a bit longer to give some roundness to the heads to resemble the seeds.

Harvest Cat Basket Cover

Holiday Stockings

Create and Decorate magazine project; Holiday 2004, Sean O'Brien Photography

My passion for old baskets and rug hooking have collided in this harvest design! With the full harvest moon as a backdrop, this bewitching black cat waits for the basket to be filled to the brim with the season's bounty! I attached my hooking to the inside of the basket lid, so the hooking would show when the basket was open and filled with pumpkins and bittersweet. You can attach it to the outside of your lid if you wish. I found the basket at a flea market - you can use any basket you choose, and simply adjust the outer border size to fit.

Pattern size is 18 x 23 inches.

I had so much fun designing these special holiday stockings! Who says you can't fill a stocking with goodies for Halloween? And the crow is in the Christmas spirit, carrying his feather tree home to decorate his nest. I hooked the stocking with my overdyed wools - they are lined and backed with wool also. All patterns come with instructions & kits come drawn on primitive linen.

Stocking measures 15 inches at the widest foot area and 23 inches long - great size to hold lots of goodies or decorations!

Polly Minick Designs!

My good friend, Polly Minick's patterns - they come to you all packaged so beautifully, as only Moda can do. Patterns come with color photos, supply list, instructions and tips for each rug.
